Batesville, Mississippi (July 24, 2015)-We are in the midst of summer and temperatures are on the rise and could reach extremes. Urgent Team, an independent operator of urgent care centers across the Southeast, wants to remind families to take extra precaution when enjoying outdoor summer activities in the intense heat of summer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), between 1999-2010, there were over 7,000 deaths related to extreme heat. The two main factors that contribute to your body’s ability to cool off when enduring extreme heat are: high humidity and personal health factors such as age and obesity.
With summer underway, it’s important to know how to prevent overheating when enjoying time outside. Whether you are playing a sport, working in the yard, or simply relaxing with friends outside; be aware of increasing temperatures and take the necessary precautions to ensure you remain cool. “Use cooling measures, such as wearing a damp bandana on your head, using hats and light colored, loose fitting clothing. Have cool misters, shaded areas or even air conditioned buildings or vehicles nearby in case of a heat related emergency,” says Lynn Scarbrough, Vice President of Clinical Operations for Urgent Team. “Go indoors or to a cool area if you feel any warning signs of heat exhaustion such as: fast heart rate, nausea and/or vomiting, headache, fatigue, dizziness or fainting.”
The CDC also encourages checking on friends, family, and neighbors who may be highly susceptible to heat related illness; such as the elderly, young children under the age of two, and people suffering from chronic disease or mental illness.
Urgent Team providers can assist patients who may be experiencing dehydration and make referrals when additional treatment is needed. For a list of our locations and services please visit UrgentTeam.com.
